Over two days, participants will have the opportunity to practice drawing and painting the portrait from a live model.
The weekend will have a Sargent theme: with the model styled in Victorian formal setting and dress.
Demonstrations will be given on how to construct a convincing portrait - initially through a drawing in charcoal (Sargent style), and then later a limited palette oil painting.
This is a casual workshop with demonstrations & tips, but light on teaching/formal structure. You’re welcome to just turn up and paint/draw!
Location: RGA Pop Up Studios @ 138 Friar Street, Reading (UK). 5 mins walk from Reading train station.
Price: £110 for the full weekend

FAQs
The RGA pop up studios are in 138-140 Friar St, Reading (formerly Revolución de Cuba Reading).
Train: The studio is a convenient a 5 minute walk from Reading train station.
Drive: There’s local town centre parking available (at the Saxon Court, Broad St Mall etc) for around £9 a day if you shop around.
Where are the studio’s located

Easels and basic drawing material (vine charcoal and paper) will be provided. However you’ll need to bring any painting equipment or special drawing material you need.
If you’d like to follow the limited palette exercise then you’ll require 4 painting colours:
Titanium White
Cadmium Red (or Cadmium Red, Venetian Red, or Scarlet Lake)
Yellow Ochre
Ivory Black
Raw Umber (optional for under drawing)
Other equipment:
Palette: wooden, glass or disposable
Solvent in an airtight container (only Odorless Mineral Spirits is permitted, e.g. Gamsol or Turpenoid)
Palette Knife
Paper Towels
Canvasses or boards or oil painting paper
Brushes
Some jam jars for storing brushes and taking away solvent
What do I need to bring?

Up to 12 participants on the day. I will reach out in advance to find out whether you’d prefer to sit or stand, and spaces will be assigned before arrival.
How many students will there be? Should I arrive early to grab a spot?

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel more than 3 weeks before a course starts, I will refund 100% of the course fee. Unfortunately, if you cancel under 3 weeks before the start date I cannot refund any of the fee.
What does casual session/light teaching mean? What can I expect?

This will be a fairly unstructured session. I will be doing a demonstration in charcoal and painting alongside you in oils but we won’t be following a prescriptive or in-depth process. I will be available to give critique/suggestions and share tips - but the session will allow artists be self-guided and follow their own preferred approach or use their own methods if they wish.
